The UPP’s St Mary’s South branch launched its first annual gala on Saturday. The event was held at Dennis’ Bar and Restaurant at Ffryes Beach, under the auspices of the area’s MP Kelvin Simon.

The gala aimed to bring the community together to build stronger bonds and to recognise five people who have contributed to the constituency’s development and vibrancy.

MP Simon presented the awardees with a plaque and commended them for pursuing excellence and for supporting and inspiring others. Simon also praised them for their leadership and collaboration on various projects during challenging times.

Awards were presented to Jean Saunders for her accomplishments in education; Dennis “Menace XL” Roberts for his accomplishments in entertainment; Oliver Joseph for business; Shanta Burton for sports; and Margaret Smith for health.

“We have made tremendous strides as a community because of the accomplishments and contributions of many outstanding residents. The list is exhaustive but we want to begin to officially recognise those in our community who go above and beyond to help others and to make giving back a community tradition,” Simon said.

He praised attendees, sponsors and organisers for the success of the gala, saying it emerged from a shared vision to empower the residents of St Mary’s South and to foster community pride.

Simon referenced impactful projects such as youth programmes, sports tournaments, health fairs, cultural events and clean-up efforts that have enhanced the aesthetics of the community and the overall well-being of residents.
