The General Post Office was closed to the public on Monday due to a break-in that left several offices damaged.

Post Master General Algernon Gomes said the intruders gained access to the building by breaking a glass pane near the customer service entrance.

When he arrived shortly after receiving a call at 8am, he observed that drawers were “ransacked” and a few doors had been kicked in when the intruders made their way upstairs.

Gomes said the perpetrators searched the ground floor, rummaged through desks and registers, and attempted to break into the strong room, but failed. They also forced their way into several offices on the first floor, including the Accounts room. Despite the disruption, Gomes said he could not immediately identify anything of value that had been stolen.

The break-in is believed to have occurred over the weekend or early Monday morning. The post office is expected to reopen this morning, however, police investigations into the incident are ongoing.
