Barbuda Airport Runway Expansion to Begin This Year

Speaking on **Pointe FM** , Prime Minister Gaston Browne confirmed that discussions have already begun with the contractor responsible for the airport’s construction. **“We intend to pursue the expansion of the Barbuda Airport concurrently. We have already started discussions with the firm and have asked them to provide a proposal to extend the runway by about 2,000 feet,”** Browne said.

He added that the government is also **finalizing designs for a new terminal** , which will support **increased air traffic and enhance passenger facilities**. **“We are developing plans for a modern terminal to accommodate growing demand and improve the overall airport experience in Barbuda,”** he stated.

The expansion is expected to **boost Barbuda’s tourism sector** , making the island more accessible for regional and international visitors. The **project will begin later this year** , with completion anticipated within **the next two years**.

The **Barbuda Airport** was officially opened in **2023** , replacing the previous airstrip destroyed by Hurricane Irma in 2017.
