Antigua and Barbuda is not expected to experience significant drought conditions over the coming months, according to the latest drought outlook released by the Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Service.

The report, issued in collaboration with the Caribbean Institute for Meteorology and Hydrology (CIMH) and the Caribbean Regional Climate Center, outlines recent and forecasted drought conditions for the twin-island nation. It shows that from December 2024 to February 2025, conditions remained normal across the country. However, slightly dry conditions were observed in the north over the six-month period ending in February, with the northeastern area identified as the most affected by short-term drought.

Despite this, rainfall predictions for the upcoming April to June (AMJ) period indicate a 35% chance of rainfall being below or near normal. Even so, the forecast based on the Standard Precipitation Index (SPI) suggests no concern for moderate or worse short-term drought through the end of June.

Similarly, for the long-term outlook covering June 2024 to May 2025, the SPI forecast also signals no expected drought of moderate severity or worse.

The Meteorological Service recommends continued monitoring of water resources, updating of drought management plans, public awareness campaigns, and infrastructure upgrades to maintain readiness and resilience.

Forecast values were based on the island-wide average and reflect an assessment inclusive of Barbuda. The outlook cautions that users assume all risk in applying the data and forecasts provided.

This is the second issue of the 2025 drought outlook. It forms part of the country’s ongoing effort to manage and mitigate the effects of climate variability across the region.
