Prime Minister Gaston Browne has announced plans to pursue a major resort development in Barbuda, which would include a golf course and several hospitality-related facilities.

Speaking on his weekly _Browne and Browne Show_ on Pointe FM, Mr Browne said the government is considering allocating approximately 200 acres of land on the island’s west coast, possibly in the area of Goat Island, for the project.

“This is one of several major developments we are looking at for Barbuda,” the Prime Minister said. “The idea is to create investment opportunities and jobs for Barbudans while boosting the island’s tourism potential.”

He indicated that the proposed project is still in the early stages of planning and that land identification and concept design are ongoing.

The announcement follows a broader push by the government to expand infrastructure and housing in Barbuda. Mr Browne reiterated that Barbudans will continue to be given preferential access to land in designated development zones, with residents able to purchase lots for EC$1, while non-Barbudan Antiguans would pay market rates.

The government has in recent years encouraged private sector investment on the island, which suffered extensive damage during Hurricane Irma in 2017. However, development efforts have been met with resistance from some members of the Barbuda Council and local residents, who have expressed concerns about environmental impacts and land rights.

Mr Browne’s latest proposal is expected to reignite debate over the future of land ownership and sustainable development on the island.

No formal planning documents or investor partners have yet been made public, and it remains unclear when the project could move forward.
