Vendors have resumed selling fans near the V.C. Bird Bust in defiance of a St. John’s Development Corporation (SJDC) directive aimed at clearing sidewalks for urban renewal.

Despite being ordered weeks ago to vacate the area, vendors reportedly return after 5 PM when police enforcement wanes. Authorities have intervened multiple times, but the vendors persist, often repacking and returning shortly after being told to leave.

Local vendors who moved into the city market are voicing anger over what they see as selective enforcement. “Is it because of the colour of their skin?” one asked, pointing to perceived bias.

The SJDC has yet to clarify how it plans to enforce its policy uniformly amid rising tensions over fairness and compliance.
