    An Opposition Clutching at Straws

    Dear Editor,

Let me state my bias from the outset: between Gaston Browne and Jamale Pringle, I firmly believe Gaston Browne is the more competent and capable leader for Antigua and Barbuda.

For weeks now, I’ve been trying to make sense of the Opposition’s argument regarding the Alfa Nero matter—and quite frankly, I still don’t understand it. They allege that money is missing, yet every piece of evidence shows otherwise.

The government received US$40 million from the sale of the vessel, and there is transparency in how those funds were allocated. So what, then, is the issue?

It seems to me that the Opposition is grasping at straws, pushing baseless claims in the hope that they’ll somehow gain political traction.

With water and road improvements underway, and an economy that is creating jobs, their platform appears increasingly hollow.

Lacking substantive issues to campaign on, they are seizing on anything—even flimsy narratives—to attack the government.

If the current administration continues to make tangible progress on roads and water, I believe the United Progressive Party (UPP) will face an uphill battle in the next election.

Moreover, the UPP must confront its leadership problem if it wants to be seen as a serious alternative. Until they can put forward someone who can match Gaston Browne in competence and intellect, they will struggle to inspire confidence.

We should not and will not remove a capable leader over false corruption claims. It’s simply not going to work.

    ALBP for now
