Housing Minister Hon. Maria Browne says the government is intensifying its focus on community road upgrades across the country, with several projects already underway in areas such as Gunthrops, Lightfoot, Mount Pleasant, and Jennings.

Speaking in an interview with ABS, the minister said while major secondary roads remain a priority, current efforts are targeting smaller, local roads that directly impact residents’ daily lives.

“We’ve done a lot of work in Gunthrops and we’re doing some in Lightfoot as well,” Minister Browne stated. “In Mount Pleasant, road works are ongoing, and Jennings and other areas are also seeing attention. We’re really focusing on community roads at this point in time.”

Secondary roads, she added, will receive more substantial investment under a forthcoming $100 million infrastructure financing arrangement. Preparatory work has already begun on some of these routes, including the Herbert’s Main Road.

“The secondary roads are of great importance as well, but those will fall under the $100 million drawdown,” she said. “Although we’ve started preparations on those—like Herbert’s Highway, for example—we’re working in phases.”

The comments come amid broader government efforts to upgrade transportation infrastructure across Antigua and Barbuda, aimed at improving safety, access, and economic activity within communities.

Minister Browne did not provide a timeline for the full roll-out of the secondary road works but indicated that planning is already in motion as part of the government’s multi-pronged development agenda.
