The Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) will introduce a modular system for mathematics assessments from June 2026, in a move officials say could transform learning across the region, including Antigua and Barbuda.

Under the pilot scheme, the syllabus will be divided into three modules, each assessed separately from third to fifth form. Students must pass each stage before progressing, with the final consolidated grade awarded at the end of fifth form.

Dr Myrick Smith, CXC’s local registrar, described the initiative as an “innovative approach” designed to boost student performance without reducing academic standards.

Currently, students sit a single comprehensive exam at the end of fifth form, which determines their overall grade. The new system will allow schools and families to choose between the modular or traditional format once the trial is completed.

“The goal is to improve outcomes in mathematics,” Dr Smith said. “This approach gives students a better chance at success.”
