Santo Domingo.- President Luis Abinader announced that the Dominican Republic will host Amazon Air Cargo operations, making the country the first hub in the Caribbean and the second in Latin America for the e-commerce giant. The agreement includes seven weekly flights with a combined capacity of 770 metric tons, reinforcing the nation’s role as a regional logistics leader.

During La Semanal con la Prensa , Abinader highlighted that Amazon, which operates in more than 20 countries and accounts for 40% of online sales in the United States, will help further consolidate the Dominican Republic’s position as a strategic trade center. He added that this milestone is part of a broader plan to establish the country as a world-class logistics hub.

Customs Director Eduardo “Yayo” Sanz Lovatón confirmed that operations will begin on September 2, with flights moving nearly 800 tons of cargo weekly. He noted that the initiative validates the security and technology systems in place at Dominican airports and will gradually reduce transaction costs while improving delivery efficiency for both local and international markets.
