Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness was elected to a third term after a general election held on the island on Wednesday, according to preliminary results released by the country’s electoral office.

The preliminary results showed that the ruling Jamaica Labor Party (JLP) won 34 seats, while the opposition People’s National Party (PNP) secured 29 seats.

The overall preliminary voter turnout was approximately 39.5 percent, said the office.

PNP leader Mark Golding has conceded defeat, congratulating the JLP on its victory in the election.

“I accept the results of these elections and although I’m obviously very disappointed in the outcome, I think it is only correct to expressly acknowledge the success that our opponents have managed to gain today,” he said.
