Antigua is proud to host Grandmaster Nigel Short, one of the most celebrated figures in international chess. Known for his legendary career and contributions to the game, Nigel Short is a former World Championship finalist and a global chess ambassador.

Short became a Grandmaster in 1984 at just 19, making him the youngest in the world at that time. He was the first Englishman to challenge for the World Chess Championship, competing against Garry Kasparov in 1993, and has since won over 70 international tournaments across six continents. His peak rating was 2712, and he reached a world ranking of No. 3. Nigel has also served as FIDE Vice President and is currently the Director for Chess Development.

During his visit, Nigel Short will appear on ABS TV on Monday, August 15th, as well as participate in other community chess events to be announced.

This visit offers a rare opportunity for our community to engage with a true chess legend. His presence underscores the growth and importance of chess in Antigua and Barbuda.
