The Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre (SLBMC) has expanded its Emergency Department with the appointment of Dr Ayanna Whittington, an Emergency Medicine physician from Barbados.
Dr Whittington, a graduate of the University of the West Indies, officially joined the hospital’s team this week. She described her arrival as an opportunity to use her experience to enhance the care provided to patients in Antigua and Barbuda.
Her recruitment forms part of the hospital’s wider strategy to strengthen services in areas of greatest demand. The Emergency Department, one of SLBMC’s most pressured units, has faced persistent challenges for both staff and patients.
Hospital officials said Dr Whittington’s appointment, alongside the recent arrival of paediatric emergency specialist Dr Christopher Sulowski, reflects a drive to improve patient outcomes and raise standards of care. Marketing and Communications Manager Salma Crump said the expertise of both doctors would help the hospital meet community needs despite ongoing pressures in healthcare.
With Dr Whittington now in post, the hospital said it is better equipped to deliver timely, high-quality emergency services to the public.
