A €1.1 million Caterpillar excavator purchased in Holland to support dredging works in Antigua and Barbuda is expected to arrive within the next two to three months.

Cabinet spokesman Maurice Merchant confirmed that 50% of the payment has already been made, with the balance due upon delivery. He said the equipment was specifically chosen after careful assessment to ensure it can break through the stubborn rock that has delayed dredging projects at St John’s Harbour and Crabs.

Previous attempts to clear the harbour channels have failed, with contractors either abandoning the work or declaring it too difficult without specialised machinery. Merchant stressed that the government was determined to avoid wasting more money on incomplete projects.

The new excavator will be used in partnership with Blue Ocean Dredging and is expected to clear the way for larger cruise ships and LNG vessels, both of which require deeper channels to dock safely.

Officials say the investment will not only support Antigua and Barbuda’s maritime infrastructure but also strengthen the tourism sector and prepare the country for energy diversification through the LNG plant at Crabs.
