Emirates Airlines is in discussions with the Government of Antigua and Barbuda to explore the addition of the Eastern Caribbean nation to its global network, signalling a potential expansion of the carrier’s footprint in the Americas.

The meeting, which took place in Dubai, brought together Adnan Kazim, Deputy President & Chief Commercial Officer; Sheikh Majid Al Mualla, Divisional Senior Vice President of International Affairs; and Thierry Aucoc, Senior Vice President Commercial Operations for West Europe and the Americas. They were joined by the His Excellency Theon Ali Deputy Head of Mission of Antigua and Barbuda to the UAE and his team to follow up on preliminary talks regarding air service links.

According to both sides, discussions centred on the strategic value of Antigua and Barbuda as a gateway to the Eastern Caribbean. The delegation outlined the country’s growing profile as a tourism and business hub, as well as its strong connectivity potential for travellers originating from the Gulf region and beyond.

The talks focused on expanding connectivity between the Caribbean and the Middle East, strengthening tourism, trade, and cultural ties, while exploring the growing demand for luxury long-haul travel from the Gulf region. Officials also noted that direct air links could facilitate investment flows, enhance regional tourism synergies, and create new opportunities for Antigua and Barbuda’s hospitality sector.

Both parties agreed to continue their discussions, with Emirates reaffirming its interest in assessing the viability of Antigua and Barbuda as a future route. Ambassador Theon Ali welcomed the dialogue as a step forward in deepening the bilateral relationship between Antigua and Barbuda and the United Arab Emirates, underscoring the government’s commitment to broadening international connectivity for the nation.

The talks come at a time when aviation leaders are gathered for the ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) Conference, where global connectivity and sustainable air transport are central themes. Officials noted that adding Antigua and Barbuda to Emirates’ route map would align with ICAO’s emphasis on strengthening international access for small island states and emerging markets.

While no timeline has been announced, both parties confirmed that dialogue will continue, with Emirates conducting route viability assessments in line with its broader network strategy.

Industry observers say that if realized, the move could position Emirates as one of the first Gulf carriers to operate scheduled services into the Eastern Caribbean, a development with significant implications for tourism, trade, and investment flows.
