A high surf warning has been issued for Barbuda, with forecasters warning of dangerous marine conditions through the weekend.

The Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Service said swells could generate waves over 10ft (3m) and seas reaching 11ft (3.4m). The warning will be in effect from Friday night through to Monday afternoon.

Neighbouring Anguilla and the British Virgin Islands are also under warnings, with hazardous conditions expected from Friday into Monday.

Officials have raised the threat level to high, warning of life-threatening rip currents, coastal flooding, beach erosion, reef damage and hazardous navigation in harbours.

Residents and visitors are being urged to stay out of the water in the affected areas, avoid reefs and coastal structures, and only swim at sheltered beaches with lifeguard supervision.

The public is advised to monitor further updates at antiguamet.com and on the Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Service’s official channels.
