Tropical Storm Jerry has moved northward over the western Atlantic, leaving behind heavy rainfall and flooding in parts of Antigua and Barbuda, where more than nine inches of rain fell in just three hours.

The storm, which earlier threatened the Leeward Islands, caused widespread disruption on Friday before veering north overnight. While no longer posing a direct threat to the Eastern Caribbean, Jerry continues to generate rough seas and dangerous rip currents across the region.

According to the National Hurricane Center in Miami, the system was located about 435 miles north of the Northern Leeward Islands early Saturday, packing maximum sustained winds near 60 mph (95 km/h). It is forecast to weaken gradually as it tracks north-northeast through the weekend.

Antigua’s Meteorological Service reported that the intense downpours led to flash flooding in low-lying areas, prompting temporary road closures and power interruptions in some communities. Authorities have since urged residents to remain cautious, particularly near coastal and flood-prone zones.

“Even though Jerry is moving away, sea conditions remain hazardous,” the Met Office said, warning that large swells and rip currents could persist through Sunday.

The storm is expected to continue on a northward path, turning east early next week as it moves further into the open Atlantic.
