Health Minister Sir Molwyn Joseph says work to install a new drainage system at Tranquility Park cemetery will begin soon following Cabinet approval.

Responding to a journalist’s question during his press conference, Joseph said the design for the drainage had already been completed and was ready to be implemented. He added that the Prime Minister had instructed that the work proceed quickly.

“I think at Cabinet tomorrow, the Cabinet will likely approve the start of the drainage within a short time,” Joseph said. “Based on the communication from the Prime Minister, I anticipate we’ll see quick action, especially on the eastern side.”

The minister said the drainage system forms part of the long-term plan for the site and will help prevent flooding after heavy rains. It follows weeks of public discussion over videos showing water accumulation at the new cemetery after recent storms.

Joseph also maintained that the issue was not due to poor planning, but rather to exceptional rainfall and the effects of climate change, and said the government remains committed to improving the site’s infrastructure.
