The Ministry of Agriculture, Lands, Fisheries and the Blue Economy has raised alarm over a growing number of thefts and vandalism targeting farms and agricultural facilities across Antigua.

Officials say the incidents — which include stolen produce, damaged irrigation systems and the killing or disappearance of livestock — are threatening national efforts to strengthen food security and sustain the agricultural sector.

In a statement, the Ministry warned that such acts not only cause serious financial losses for individual farmers but also discourage investment and deter young people and new entrants from pursuing agriculture.

“Vandalism in agriculture extends beyond individual loss,” the Ministry said. “It disrupts production, raises costs, and affects food prices and availability.”

The government has been investing in training, infrastructure and access to modern technology to revitalise the industry. However, the rise in farm-related crimes is undermining those gains and creating tension in rural communities, where many depend on agriculture for their livelihoods.

Citizens are being urged to treat vandalism against farms as a direct attack on the nation’s food security. The Ministry is calling on the public to report suspicious activity and to respect agricultural property and produce.

Farmers are also being encouraged to adopt preventive measures, such as better lighting, fencing and record-keeping, and to collaborate with neighbours through community watch groups.

Authorities say they are exploring partnerships with law enforcement and community organisations to improve rural patrols and introduce security support for vulnerable farms. Public education campaigns are also planned to raise awareness of agriculture’s importance and promote collective responsibility for protecting the country’s food supply.

The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to creating a secure environment for farmers, saying that safeguarding agricultural property and livelihoods is central to reducing Antigua and Barbuda’s food import bill and achieving self-sufficiency.
