Prime Minister Gaston Browne says the government has begun routine spot checks of imported containers as part of a wider effort to curb customs fraud and revenue loss.

In a post on Facebook, Browne announced that “routine spot checks of containers with products imported commenced today,” adding that invoices will be audited against the market value of goods and “large penalties” will be imposed for under-invoicing.

The move follows Browne’s recent pledge to tighten customs oversight and establish a People’s Restitution Fund to collect penalties, interest, and other charges for customs violations. He said proceeds from that fund will go toward financing social programs.

The new inspection regime is part of the government’s push to strengthen transparency and ensure fair revenue collection from importers.
