A long-time vendor in St. John’s has called on Prime Minister Gaston Browne to intervene after months of challenges with market infrastructure in the King George area.

Speaking in a video posted online, the vendor, who has sold goods in the location for nearly 20 years, described ongoing issues with flooding, damaged tables, and inadequate repairs. She said that while Market Street had been cleared for redevelopment, she was not permitted to return there and has been forced to operate under difficult conditions at her established King George location.

“I’ve been selling here for all these years. This is where my children have grown up. Now I come and see this mess. It is wrong and unfair,” the vendor said, describing damaged tables and a blocked drainage system that threatens her ability to operate during rain.

The vendor explained that she had contacted St. John’s Development and other authorities regarding repairs but received no resolution. She said public works officials had attempted partial fixes but left much of the area in disrepair. She also raised concerns over fees she pays for vending permits, questioning why she is expected to contribute while necessary maintenance remains unaddressed.

She tagged Prime Minister Browne in her post, urging government intervention. “With all due respect, Mr. Gaston Browne, something needs to be done. I vote for you, but we need help on this corner,” she said.

The vendor emphasised that her operations are legal and that she complies with regulations, despite the challenges. She also noted that her livelihood depends on the location and that poor infrastructure directly affects her ability to provide for her family.

Local vendors have occasionally faced similar challenges in St. John’s, particularly in areas undergoing redevelopment, highlighting ongoing tensions between infrastructure upgrades and the needs of small business owners.
