The government is accelerating its **“One Million Trees in a Year”** reforestation campaign through the Forestry Division and the Department of the Environment as part of its broader environmental restoration and climate resilience agenda.

Director General of Communications Maurice Merchant said the initiative will move into a more active phase aimed at restoring degraded areas, improving watershed protection, and increasing tree cover across the country.

“The government has committed to the acceleration of the One Million Trees initiative,” Merchant said during Thursday’s post-briefing session. “This campaign will be coordinated through the Forestry Division and the Department of the Environment to ensure that we meet our target within the stipulated time frame.”

The program is expected to focus on community involvement, school-based planting activities, and partnerships with environmental organizations to achieve the national goal.

Officials say the campaign supports Antigua and Barbuda’s commitments under global environmental and climate agreements, helping to strengthen biodiversity conservation and reduce the impacts of deforestation and land degradation.
