The Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party has launched a new women’s movement aimed at defending Minister Maria Browne amid what party officials describe as targeted political attacks from the opposition.

Speaking on the Browne and Browne show, ABLP Chief Organizer Charlene James said the movement was created to show solidarity with Browne, the country’s only female Cabinet minister. James told listeners that the party is mobilising women across Antigua and Barbuda and will stage a rally and picnic to publicly demonstrate support for her.

She encouraged women to become more involved in the party’s activities, saying the organising effort is intended to push back against attempts to undermine Browne’s reputation.

During the programme, Sir Molwyn Joseph strongly defended Browne, condemning what he called “wicked” attacks on her. He stressed the importance of encouraging more women to enter politics and take on leadership roles and said the tone of the criticism directed at Browne underscores the need for greater support for women in public life.

The Labour Party says the new women’s movement will serve as a platform for organising, training, and political mobilisation, with the immediate goal of reinforcing support for Browne and strengthening female participation across the party.
