Antigua and Barbuda’s health authorities are marking World AIDS Day Activities with a renewed call for vigilance, noting that while HIV case numbers have not sharply increased in recent years, the pattern remains concerning.

Data from the HIV/AIDS Secretariat shows new diagnoses have held steady at an average of about 44 cases annually over the past five years. The lowest figure was recorded in 2020, followed by a rise in 2021 as normal health services resumed after the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Officials say the data consistently shows the heterosexual population remains the most affected group, countering assumptions that only high-risk or vulnerable communities dominate the statistics. Health professionals warn the general population should not assume lower risk or overlook the need for regular testing.

As global partners work toward the UNAIDS 95-95-95 targets, local authorities are prioritizing expanded testing, early diagnosis and strict adherence to treatment. Increasing the number of people who know their HIV status remains central to improving treatment coverage and achieving viral suppression.

With World AIDS Day highlighting ongoing challenges, officials are urging the public to stay informed, practice responsible sexual health and support efforts to curb the spread of HIV.
