The Antigua and Barbuda Electoral Commission says it plans to deepen public consultation and engagement with political actors and stakeholders as it explores the continued modernisation of the country’s electoral system.

In a New Year’s Day message, Antigua and Barbuda Electoral Commission Chairman His Excellency Ambassador Arthur G.B. Thomas said the Commission recognises that democratic development is an ongoing process that requires sustained dialogue and participation.

“Democratic consolidation is not a static achievement, but a continuing process,” Thomas said.

He said the Commission is committed to fostering “broader public consultation and deeper engagement with all political actors and stakeholders” as it examines opportunities for innovation and modernisation within the electoral system.

Thomas noted that such engagement will be critical as the Commission gives “thoughtful consideration of reforms” to ensure that the Representation of the People Act keeps pace with evolving democratic practices, technological advances, and public expectations.

He said transparency, professionalism, and institutional integrity remain central to the Commission’s work, adding that these values are essential to maintaining public confidence in the electoral process.

“As Chairman, I reaffirm ABEC’s commitment to working with the people of Antigua and Barbuda in a spirit of openness, consultation, and shared responsibility,” Thomas said.

The Commission said its focus on engagement and consultation forms part of its broader efforts to ensure that democratic institutions remain credible, responsive, and worthy of public trust.
