Prime Minister Gaston Browne says Antigua and Barbuda will meet growing global pressures with calm, disciplined diplomacy rather than confrontation, as international decisions continue to affect small states in an increasingly uncertain world.
In his 2026 New Year’s Address, Browne acknowledged that global conditions remain volatile, with shifting geopolitical dynamics and policy decisions taken abroad often producing direct consequences for small, open economies such as Antigua and Barbuda.
“Global currents shift from time to time, creating geopolitical challenges,” Browne said, noting that “decisions taken elsewhere ripple across small states such as ours.”
Despite those pressures, Browne said the country enters the new year from a position of strength and will resist reactionary responses, choosing instead to engage international partners with competence and restraint.
“Our strength has never been found in gripes, but in competence; not in anger, but in steadfast diplomacy; not in retreat, but in resilience,” he said.
The prime minister framed diplomacy as a core pillar of national survival and advancement, particularly for small states that lack military power or economic scale. He said Antigua and Barbuda’s approach to foreign relations would continue to be guided by respect, persistence and good faith, even in moments of strain.
Browne pointed to recent international developments as a reminder that calm leadership is required when external decisions provoke domestic concern, stressing that emotional or divisive reactions weaken a country’s ability to protect its interests.
“Calm seas never made a skilled sailor,” he said, using the proverb to underscore the need for steadiness and resolve in the face of global uncertainty.
He also linked foreign policy strength to domestic cohesion, arguing that unity at home enhances a country’s credibility and negotiating power abroad.
“Unity at home is our first line of defense abroad,” Browne said.
The prime minister said Antigua and Barbuda would continue to pursue constructive engagement with international partners while safeguarding national interests, emphasizing that diplomacy, rather than hostility, remains the most effective tool for navigating external challenges.
He urged citizens to approach global developments with confidence and patience, saying resilience, national unity and principled engagement have long defined Antigua and Barbuda’s response to adversity and will continue to guide the country through the year ahead.
