Residents in several communities across Antigua have raised concerns after police recorded a spike in break-ins and thefts over a 24-hour period between 10 and 11 January.

According to the Criminal Investigations Department’s morning report, homes, a church and businesses were targeted, with offenders gaining access through unsecured doors, windows and louvres, often while occupants were asleep or away.

One of the most serious incidents occurred in Blue Waters, where intruders entered a home in the early hours by removing mosquito gauze from an unlocked window and using a tool to retrieve valuables without entering the house. Police said large sums of US and foreign currency were stolen.

Similar break-ins were reported in Golden Grove, Golden Grove Extension, Cassada Gardens and Sutherlands. In several cases, front doors were forced open or louvre panes removed, with items including televisions, mobile phones, clothing and cash taken.

Elsewhere, two industrial jackhammers valued at about EC$11,000 were stolen from a private yard in Upper Gambles, while a business on Lower Church Street reported the theft of sensor street lamps. CCTV footage has been reviewed, but no suspects have been identified.

    Police investigations are continuing.
