A private diagnostic imaging centre in Antigua has begun carrying out MRI scans before its formal launch, in an effort to reduce long waiting times for patients needing critical imaging.

Doctors Medical Centre said the decision was taken after continued pressure on existing MRI services left many patients waiting weeks for scans needed to guide treatment.

The facility is equipped with an open MRI system — the first of its kind in the Eastern Caribbean — designed to better accommodate patients with claustrophobia. Artificial intelligence technology is used to enhance image accuracy.

Medical director Dr Joey John said access is not limited to referrals from Mount St John’s Medical Centre and is open to the wider public, with an emphasis on clearing the current backlog.

The centre, staffed by trained specialists and fitted with new equipment, plans to offer a full suite of diagnostic imaging services.

Health officials have long warned that limited imaging capacity has slowed diagnosis and delayed care across Antigua and Barbuda.
