Tsunami Ready Initiative Launched in Barbuda:
    Enhancing Community Resilience

An initiative to bolster community preparedness and resilience against potential tsunami threats in Barbuda got underway on the sister-isle on Friday.

Representatives from the National Office of Disaster Services (NODS) and the United States’ National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) met with Chairman of the Barbuda Council John Mussington and members of local emergency services to officially commence the Tsunami Ready initiative in Barbuda.

The launch event featured a variety of interactive activities, including site visits to designated tsunami evacuation zones. These visits are a crucial part of the initiative, focused on developing a comprehensive tsunami evacuation map specifically tailored for the unique context of Barbuda.

The insights gained from these activities will inform the creation of effective infrastructure and evacuation strategies, ensuring timely and efficient responses during tsunami incidents.

Mussington underscored the critical importance of tsunami readiness in the community, emphasizing that such events can occur with little warning.

He stated, “It’s going to take teamwork”; it is essential for Barbuda to be well-informed and equipped to respond appropriately to these threats. He encouraged residents to actively engage in their preparedness efforts by participating in the annual Caribe Wave Tsunami Exercise scheduled for March, highlighting the collective responsibility of the community in safeguarding lives.

The Tsunami Ready initiative aspires to foster a culture of preparedness within Barbuda, ensuring that residents are equipped with the knowledge and resources necessary to respond effectively to tsunami events.

Through education, community involvement, and proactive planning, Barbuda aims to enhance its resilience against the impacts of tsunamis.
