Hazardous marine conditions and above-normal winds are expected to impact the northeastern Caribbean this week, prompting advisories for mariners in Antigua and Barbuda and surrounding islands.

Easterly winds are forecast to strengthen through Tuesday night into Wednesday, reaching up to 41 km/h with gusts near 63 km/h, before gradually easing later in the week. Winds are expected to remain stronger than usual into the weekend.

Rough seas will primarily affect open Atlantic waters, where wave heights may reach about 3.4 metres, with occasional waves near 4.3 metres. Near-shore and sheltered coastal areas are expected to be less affected.

The conditions are likely to trigger small craft advisories, with officials urging small-vessel operators to remain in port or close to safe harbour. Residents are also advised to secure loose items and monitor official weather updates as the system progresses.
