The Government of Antigua and Barbuda has approved the immediate recruitment of 100 new law enforcement personnel, comprising 50 police officers and 50 soldiers.

The announcement was made by Maurice Merchant, Director General of Communications in the Prime Minister’s Office, during the weekly post-Cabinet press briefing.

Mr Merchant said the move is intended to strengthen the operational capacity of both the Royal Police Force (RPF) and the Antigua and Barbuda Defence Force (ABDF), enhancing their ability to protect citizens and respond to security challenges.

He explained that the decision followed a detailed briefing to Cabinet on national security matters by senior officials from both agencies. Those presenting included Commissioner of Police Everton Jeffers, Deputy Commissioner Louise Benjamin-Quashie, Chief of Staff of the ABDF Brigadier Telbert Benjamin, and Captain Trevor Pennyfeather.

According to Mr Merchant, Cabinet was updated on the current security environment and ongoing efforts to address criminal activity across the country. He said the recruitment drive forms part of what he described as a “strengthened national response” to crime and emerging security threats.

“This decision reflects government’s firm commitment, and a statement that the Prime Minister has been making time and time again – that law enforcement officials will be taking the fight to criminals,” Mr Merchant said.

Qualified individuals are being encouraged to apply immediately through the relevant agencies.
