Tourism Minister Charles “Max” Fernandez has praised the partnership between the Government of Antigua and Barbuda and Global Ports Holding Ltd (GPH), describing it as a major step forward for the country’s cruise tourism sector.

Speaking at the opening of the new cruise terminal on Lower Newgate Street, Mr Fernandez said the collaboration with GPH and Antigua Cruise Port (ACP) had reshaped the nation’s cruise offering by introducing international expertise, operational efficiency and a long-term development vision.

He said the terminal had become more than a physical facility, linking cruise passengers directly with local culture, businesses and communities.

The minister said the 2019 agreement was made after careful consideration, as the government sought to position Antigua and Barbuda competitively in a rapidly evolving cruise industry.

According to Mr Fernandez, GPH brought the experience and scale needed to elevate the country from a port of call to a regional leader in cruise operations. He said cruise passenger arrivals are projected to double this year compared with pre-partnership levels and the period following the Covid-19 shutdown.

Mr Fernandez also highlighted ACP’s decision to continue paying staff during the pandemic lockdown, describing it as a strong example of corporate responsibility.

He added that the partnership has led to modernisation of cruise facilities, improved passenger flow, a better visitor experience and greater involvement of local businesses in the cruise tourism sector.
