The Antigua Public Utilities Authority will coordinate pipe replacement work with the government before roads in St. John’s are resurfaced, as part of an effort to prevent newly rebuilt streets from being dug up again, Works Minister Maria Browne said.

Speaking during a public consultation on the redevelopment of the capital, Browne said road reconstruction will follow the replacement of aging water infrastructure, noting that coordination with APUA is essential to avoid repeating past problems where new roads were damaged shortly after completion.

She explained that many of the city’s pipes are old and in need of replacement, making it impractical to resurface roads before underground works are completed. The sequencing, she said, is intended to save money, reduce disruption and extend the lifespan of new road surfaces.

Browne said the approach reflects a broader shift toward coordinated planning among government agencies as major infrastructure upgrades get underway in St. John’s.
