Tourism Minister Charles Max Fernandez warned that the condition of St. John’s can discourage visitors from exploring the capital, saying negative first impressions have already caused some cruise passengers to remain on board rather than venture into the city.

Speaking during a public consultation on the redevelopment of St. John’s, Fernandez recalled instances where visitors were hesitant to leave their cruise ships after seeing the state of parts of the city. He said this reaction underscores the importance of presentation, noting that first impressions play a decisive role in shaping visitor experiences and spending.

However, the minister stressed that the push to improve St. John’s is not driven by tourism alone. He said the initiative is primarily about improving the quality of life and environment for residents, with tourism benefits flowing naturally from a cleaner, safer and more attractive capital.

Fernandez said a revitalised St. John’s would strengthen national pride while also ensuring that the city reflects the standards Antigua and Barbuda wishes to project to the world.
