President of the Antigua and Barbuda Association of Persons Living with Disabilities Bernard Warner is to be nominated for a national award in recognition of decades of advocacy on behalf of persons with disabilities.

Prime Minister Gaston Browne announced the planned nomination during a town hall meeting last week.

Warner, who lives with a disability himself, has spent more than 30 years championing inclusion, dignity and economic empowerment for persons with disabilities. His work has included securing more than EC$100,000 through the GEF Small Grants Programme to support self-sufficiency initiatives and improve livelihoods.

He has also played a hands-on role in supporting members of the association, including coordinating daily transportation to ensure access to services, programmes and employment opportunities.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Warner led efforts to distribute food and essential supplies and advocated for improved housing conditions for persons with disabilities, highlighting their needs during the national emergency.

The nomination recognises Warner’s long-standing service, practical support and sustained commitment to improving the lives of persons with disabilities in Antigua and Barbuda.
