The Warri Rival project has secured the full and unequivocal backing of the Cabinet of Antigua and Barbuda following a comprehensive presentation to Ministers earlier this week.

Spearheaded by the Department of Creative Industries, the initiative was presented as far more than a revival of a traditional board game. Cabinet members were given an in-depth and immersive overview of Warri’s cultural and historical significance, tracing its African origins and its enduring presence across Caribbean societies.

Ministers examined how the Warri Rival project aims to preserve national heritage while repositioning the ancient strategy game as a contemporary cultural asset. Officials explained that the initiative blends tradition with innovation, creating opportunities in education, tourism, and the wider creative economy.

Warri was highlighted not only as a game of skill but also as a valuable educational tool. According to officials, it promotes critical thinking, patience, and strategic planning among young people—skills considered essential for personal and academic development.

By institutionalizing the programme, the government hopes to strengthen national pride while also opening avenues for regional and international cultural exchange.

The next major event on the calendar is the highly anticipated Inter-Schools Warri Championship, which is expected to bring together students from across Antigua and Barbuda in a spirited showcase of strategy and cultural celebration.

Organizers say the competition will represent a significant milestone in embedding Warri more firmly within the country’s educational and cultural landscape.

With Cabinet’s endorsement now secured, the Warri Rival project moves from concept to expanded implementation, positioning Antigua and Barbuda at the forefront of a regional revival of one of Africa’s most enduring traditional games.
