The Government of Antigua and Barbuda has approved a nationwide street and community lighting improvement programme after a Cabinet briefing by the Electricity Manager of the Antigua Public Utilities Authority (APUA).

Director General of Communications in the Office of the Prime Minister, Maurice Merchant, said the official was invited to address concerns about inadequate lighting in several communities.

Cabinet reviewed conditions in residential areas, major roads and public spaces, identifying locations requiring urgent attention to improve visibility and public safety.

APUA has committed to carrying out repairs and upgrades, saying it has the technical capacity and equipment to complete the work within a reasonable timeframe.

The programme will include installing new streetlights, repairing faulty units, replacing damaged fixtures and upgrading systems where necessary. Priority will be given to areas with the most severe deficiencies.

The government said improved lighting is expected to strengthen road safety, support crime prevention and contribute to national security and community development.
