Work on All Saints Road to Begin Monday, PM Says Public Works Will Take Over Project

Repairs to the heavily deteriorated All Saints Road will begin as early as Monday, with the government shifting responsibility for the project to the Public Works Department in a bid to fast-track long-delayed upgrades.

Prime Minister Gaston Browne said the decision reflects a move away from an earlier proposal involving a Canadian contractor, which he indicated would have cost significantly more and taken longer to implement.

“We’re going to fix All Saints Road,” Browne said, adding that “work will start by Monday,” with Public Works now tasked with carrying out the resurfacing.

He disclosed that a previous option involving a Canadian firm was estimated at about $50 million, but argued that the government no longer sees that route as necessary.

“That Canadian option was about $50 million,” Browne said, suggesting that the cost was excessive given the urgency of the situation and the capacity available locally.

Instead, Browne said the government will rely on its own resources to deliver the project more efficiently.

“We believe that Public Works can do it cheaper and faster,” he said, pointing to a more direct approach that avoids the delays often associated with external procurement processes.

The Prime Minister also made clear that financing is not an obstacle, stating that “the money is in place” to undertake the repairs.

All Saints Road, one of the country’s key transportation corridors, has been the subject of mounting public frustration due to its poor condition, with motorists and residents repeatedly calling for urgent intervention.

Browne’s announcement signals a shift in strategy, with the government opting to bypass prolonged negotiations and move immediately to execution through local capacity.

The timeline now places the start of physical works within days, marking what could be the most decisive step yet toward addressing one of the island’s most persistent infrastructure complaints.
