ST. JOHN’S, Antigua — Demolition work has begun on a property in Yorks as part of a housing initiative aimed at rebuilding and improving living conditions within the community.

The effort, described as the first day of clearing activities, is being carried out under the HAPI programme, with officials indicating the work is intended to prepare the site for new development that will support a family and contribute to community renewal.

A statement shared by community stakeholders described the initiative as going beyond construction, framing it as an effort to “rebuild hope, uplift communities, and transform lives.”

The project has drawn the involvement of several public officials, including Prime Minister Gaston Browne, Senator Rawdon Turner, and Housing Minister Charles Fernandez, along with other representatives.

Images shared from the site show an aging wooden structure and surrounding debris, highlighting the condition of the property prior to demolition.

Organisers say further updates will be provided as work progresses and the space is redeveloped.
