PM Browne Says Government Will Invest Heavily in Tyra Fenton Following CARIFTA Sprint Success

Prime Minister Gaston Browne says his administration will “invest heavily” in sprint star Tyra Fenton following her medal-winning performances at the CARIFTA Games.

Speaking on his weekly radio programme after Fenton’s 100 metres victory on Saturday, Browne underscored the government’s commitment to supporting the young athlete’s future.

“But we’re going to invest heavily in her,” he said, adding that she has “the full support of my administration.”

Fenton has emerged as one of Antigua and Barbuda’s standout performers at the regional championships in Grenada, delivering across multiple events. She captured gold in the Under-17 girls’ 100 metres, followed by another gold in the 200 metres, and also secured bronze in the 400 metres to complete a three-medal haul.

Her performances have highlighted both her sprint speed and endurance, placing her among the top young athletes in the region.

Browne noted that Fenton has already been awarded an athletic scholarship, but said her family has opted for her to complete her secondary education locally before pursuing studies overseas.

“You know, we’ve given her an athletic scholarship. Her mom says that she wants her to finish high school here,” he said, indicating she is likely about a year away from transitioning to college.

He added that discussions are ongoing regarding potential institutions abroad, with the government prepared to assist in identifying the best opportunities for her continued development.

Fenton’s performances at the CARIFTA Games, held at the Kirani James Athletic Stadium, have positioned her as a leading figure in Antigua and Barbuda’s next generation of track and field talent.
