The government has hired 48 new workers at the Public Works Department as part of efforts to accelerate road repairs across the country, Prime Minister Gaston Browne has announced.

Speaking on the Browne and Browne Show, Browne said the additional workers will be trained and deployed to strengthen road maintenance crews, particularly in response to concerns about the pace of repairs.

“In fact, just yesterday… Public Works would have taken on at least 48 young people… especially when it comes to patching the roads,” Browne said.

He acknowledged that roadworks have not been progressing quickly enough in some areas, but said the new hires are expected to significantly boost capacity and improve response times.

The Prime Minister also sought to assure the public that funding is not a constraint, stating that the government has the resources needed to carry out the work.

“Money’s not an issue… we have more money that we can spend right now,” he said.

Browne said road repairs will continue beyond the election period, dismissing suggestions that the recent push is temporary.

“This is not a little flurry of action… we’re going to continue with the same or even greater intensity after the elections,” he added.

He noted that multiple contractors are already engaged across constituencies and that the government is focusing on more durable infrastructure, including the use of concrete roads in communities to better withstand flooding and extreme heat.

While apologising for disruptions caused by ongoing works, Browne said the aim is to systematically address road conditions nationwide until the issue is fully resolved.
