Pringle Says UPP Will Change Work Permit System to Let Workers Move Jobs Freely

United Progressive Party Leader Jamale Pringle says a United Progressive Party government would change how work permits are issued, allowing foreign workers to change jobs without having to reapply each time.

Speaking at a rally in All Saints, Pringle said the current system ties workers to a single employer, forcing them to go through a costly and repetitive process if they want to move.

“The UPP will grant work permits on an industrial basis or professional basis, instead of being employer specific,” he said.

He explained that under the proposed system, a worker would receive a permit based on their profession or industry, rather than a specific job.

“This will enable the permit holder to seek new employment without requiring new documentation and having to spend money over and over again,” Pringle added.

The proposal means that, for example, a construction worker or a hospitality employee could move between jobs within that sector without needing a new permit each time.

Pringle said the change is intended to make the system fairer for workers who contribute to the economy but face repeated costs and restrictions under the current rules.

“We understand that persons would have moved from their country of birth to live within Antigua and Barbuda, and they help to build our economy,” he said.

He said the reform would be part of a broader effort to modernise labour and business systems in Antigua and Barbuda.

The general election is scheduled for April 30.
