Government Plans Thousands More Homes as Housing Programme Expands

Prime Minister Gaston Browne says his administration plans to significantly expand its housing programme, with up to 3,000 additional homes targeted in the next term.

Browne said the government has already built or supported the construction of more than 4,000 homes through a combination of direct development and subsidy programmes.

“National Housing would have built well in excess of 1,500 homes, and when you add those of CHAPA, over 2,000 homes were built by our government,” he said. “When you add those that have been subsidized using the CABI programme, over 4,000 homes would have been built and/or subsidized by my administration.”

He described the initiative as part of a broader effort to expand home ownership and improve living standards across the country.

Looking ahead, Browne said the next phase will scale up construction, with plans to deliver between 2,000 and 3,000 additional homes.

“We expect to do at least maybe 2,000, 3,000 homes,” he said.

To support the expansion, Browne indicated that additional labour will be brought in from the Dominican Republic to accelerate construction timelines and increase output.

The housing push forms part of the government’s wider development strategy, which includes continued investment in infrastructure, social programmes and economic opportunities.

Browne said the objective is not only to address housing shortages, but also to strengthen long-term economic stability by increasing access to property ownership.

“At the end of the day, it’s about improving the living standards of the people,” he said.
