The Antigua and Barbuda Workers’ Union extends sincere congratulations to Deputy General Secretary, Chester Hughes, on his recent appointment to the Senate of Antigua and Barbuda.

The ABWU is elated that Hughes, an esteemed champion for workers, has been elevated to this important national role.

“We have complete confidence that Senator Hughes will serve with distinction and in the best interest of all citizens and residents of Antigua and Barbuda,” ABWU General Secretary, David Massiah said.

Hughes has dedicated nearly his entire professional life to advocating for the well-being, advancement, and protection of working people across Antigua and Barbuda. His unwavering commitment to social justice, equity, and national development has earned him widespread respect within the labour movement and the wider society.

At the ABWU, Hughes has represented hundreds of workers at every level, including the Industrial Court. He is recognised as a skilled negotiator of favourable collective bargaining agreements and a keen shaper of policies aimed at improving the quality of life for workers and their families. At the international level, Hughes continues to serve as a member of the World Executive Body of Union Network International (UNI).

In addition to his distinguished career as a trade unionist, Hughes served as a Parliamentarian in the Administration of former Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer between 2004 and 2014. He was a member of the Lower House for All Saints East and St. Luke, and also served as Deputy Speaker. Hughes also previously served as an Opposition Senator.

Demonstrating his continued commitment to personal and professional growth, Hughes recently completed a Bachelor of Laws, LLB from Arden University UK, earning Upper Second Class Honours. He is currently preparing to write the Bar in London, having been granted student membership with the Honourable Society of the Middle Temple.

The ABWU is confident that Hughes’ extensive experience in labour relations, governance, advocacy, and law uniquely positions him to make a meaningful contribution in the Upper House.

The Union once again congratulates Senator Hughes on this well-deserved appointment and wishes him every success as he embarks on this new chapter of national service.
