A woman in Antigua is expected to undergo surgery after suffering a serious ankle injury during Friday’s earthquake while trying to get her two-year-old child to safety.

Eli Fuller said his wife, Angela Fuller, fell while attempting to carry their toddler downstairs as the shaking triggered panic inside their home during the magnitude 6-plus earthquake that struck east of the Leeward Islands.

According to Fuller, Angela managed to keep the child safe during the incident but severely injured her ankle in the process.

“Surgery on Tuesday to repair smashed up ankle after swelling goes down,” Fuller wrote in a social media post shared Saturday.

He thanked staff at Woods Radiology, Urgent Care and Dr. “Snowy” Wiik for assisting following the incident.

The earthquake, which was widely felt across Antigua and Barbuda and neighboring islands, prompted concern across the region but resulted in no widespread reports of injuries or major structural damage.

Fuller said the incident serves as a reminder that earthquakes can quickly become dangerous, especially in the Caribbean, which sits along several active tectonic plate boundaries and has a long history of major seismic events.

He referenced several historic earthquakes that affected the region, including the 1843 Guadeloupe–Antigua earthquake and the 1974 Antigua region earthquake.

Officials have said there was no tsunami threat associated with Friday’s quake, though aftershocks remain possible.
