The Government of Antigua and Barbuda has approved a range of initiatives aimed at improving water and telecommunications services while maintaining support for consumers amid continued global economic uncertainty.

Cabinet received updates on infrastructure projects being carried out by the Government and the Antigua Public Utilities Authority (APUA), including efforts to expand water production and improve storage capacity.

Water production currently stands at about 11 million imperial gallons per day and is expected to increase as new infrastructure comes into operation. Several water storage tanks are being restored and are expected to return to service in the coming months. Plans are also in place to rehabilitate four tanks at the Air Force Base and upgrade two others, increasing storage capacity.

Cabinet reaffirmed its commitment to keeping gasoline prices subsidised, saying the measure continues to shield consumers from fluctuations in international oil markets.

On telecommunications, Cabinet was updated on plans for an additional sub-station to improve network reliability and internet services. Discussions are also continuing on a bond initiative that would allow APUA to finance major capital projects.

Officials also reported progress on the subsea cable project, which is expected to strengthen the country’s communications network by improving resilience and capacity.

Cabinet was further informed that APUA expects movement on number portability by July 2026, allowing customers greater flexibility in choosing telecommunications providers.

The Government said it will continue to monitor developments in the global oil market and pursue measures to reduce the impact of rising energy costs on households and businesses.
