The Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre has begun mandatory Ebola response training for its clinical staff as part of efforts to strengthen the hospital’s readiness for potential infectious disease emergencies.

The training is being coordinated by the hospital’s Infectious Disease and Employee Health Division together with the Learning and Development Unit. It focuses on helping healthcare workers identify possible Ebola cases, apply the correct infection control measures, and safely manage patients while reducing the risk of transmission.

Hospital administrators said the initiative reflects the institution’s commitment to maintaining a high level of emergency preparedness, despite there being no reported Ebola cases in Antigua and Barbuda.

An initial group of healthcare professionals has already completed the programme, with additional staff expected to undergo the training in phases.

Officials said ongoing education and preparedness are essential components of the hospital’s infection prevention strategy and will help ensure a swift, coordinated response should an infectious disease threat arise.
