    Air Quality Moderate

ST. JOHN’S, Antigua — Air quality across Antigua and Barbuda is forecast to deteriorate to moderate levels Friday as another surge of Saharan dust moves across the country.

The Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Service issued an Air Quality Bulletin at 12:20 p.m., saying the conditions are expected to persist until Friday evening.

Forecasters said the deterioration is associated with elevated concentrations of fine and coarse particulate matter, known as PM2.5 and PM10, linked to the 32nd notable surge of Saharan dust affecting Antigua and Barbuda in 2026.

The Air Quality Index is forecast to range between 70 and 100, with an Air Pollution Alert Level II in effect.

While the health risk is considered low for most people, the Meteorological Service said people who are unusually sensitive to air pollution should pay closer attention to conditions. Those considered most vulnerable include people with respiratory or heart disease, older adults and children.

The Met Service said active children and adults, along with people suffering from respiratory illnesses such as asthma, should limit prolonged outdoor exertion while the dust remains present.

Officials noted that although the air quality remains generally acceptable, some pollutants could pose moderate health concerns for a small number of particularly sensitive individuals.

Residents are being encouraged to continue monitoring official forecasts and air quality updates as conditions develop.
