The Dominican Republic community living in Antigua has issued a strong statement denouncing individuals accused of committing crimes that tarnish the country’s reputation.

In a message circulated on Thursday, the group called for unity and vigilance in protecting Antigua’s standing as a place of “good and hardworking people”.

“Dominicans who don’t think about our community and our old and bearded island before committing their crimes… don’t count on us,” the statement read. “We have to take care of this country that gives us the opportunity to live better.”

The group said it would not accept anyone, “coming from wherever he comes”, damaging Antigua’s image. It also urged swift justice, calling for offenders to be returned to their home country if found guilty.

Members of the Dominican Republic community stressed the importance of safeguarding opportunities for residents and preserving the positive reputation of their adopted home.
