Attorney General Sir Steadroy Benjamin will today present the _Electronic Crimes (Amendment) Bill, 2025_ to Parliament, a key measure aimed at bolstering digital investigations and safeguarding citizens’ privacy in an increasingly online world.
The Bill updates Section 18 of the _Electronic Crimes Act, 2013_ , which governs the use of Production Orders — legal directives that allow investigators to obtain electronic evidence in cyber-related cases. The amendments clarify the procedures for issuing and serving these orders, specify how information must be provided, and enhance data protection safeguards to prevent misuse.
It also introduces tougher penalties for non-compliance, holding both individuals and organizations to stricter standards of cooperation during lawful investigations.
Sir Steadroy said the legislative updates are vital to ensuring Antigua and Barbuda’s laws keep pace with emerging digital threats.
The proposed amendments form part of a wider package of legislative reforms being debated in Parliament today, as the Government seeks to modernize the nation’s legal framework and reinforce its resilience to evolving technological and security challenges.
